I'm choosing Halloween.

Every. Single. Time.

I already love Disney Cruise Line for the ships, rotational dining, Broadway-style shows, characters, Castaway Cay, endless soft-serve and the fact that so much is included in your cruise fare. But add pumpkins, Halloween costumes, trick-or-treating, special character outfits and an entire Disney ship decorated for spooky season?

You don't have to ask me twice.

Halloween on the High Seas takes everything I already love about a Disney cruise and adds another layer of Disney magic, and that's exactly why I love these sailings so much.

If you've been debating whether you should choose a regular Disney cruise or wait for one of the special Halloween sailings, here's why I think they're so much fun.

🎃 First: What Is Halloween on the High Seas?

Halloween on the High Seas is Disney Cruise Line's seasonal Halloween celebration offered aboard select sailings during the fall, typically in September and October. Not every cruise during that period is necessarily a Halloween sailing, so you'll want to specifically look for itineraries labelled Halloween on the High Seas when booking.

And don't worry if you're not someone who enjoys genuinely scary Halloween events.

This is Disney Halloween.

Think:

You're not going to spend your vacation being chased down the hallway by a monster when you're trying to get back to your stateroom.

It's cute, festive, slightly spooky and very Disney.

Exactly my kind of Halloween.

🧡 It's Already a Disney Cruise...You Just Get MORE

This is probably the biggest reason I love Halloween on the High Seas.

You're not sacrificing your normal Disney cruise experience to have a Halloween cruise.

You're adding Halloween TO it.

You still get all the things that make Disney Cruise Line special.

Your cruise fare already includes your rotational dining, casual dining, soft drinks at meals and beverage stations, snacks, soft-serve ice cream, Broadway-style entertainment, character experiences, pools, recreation, kids clubs, onboard activities and so much more.

Then Halloween on the High Seas adds seasonal experiences on top of that.

So you can spend your morning lying on a beautiful beach...

Come back onboard...

Eat some ice cream...

See a Broadway-style show...

Dress up for Halloween...

Go trick-or-treating...

Meet Mickey in his Halloween outfit...

And then go order room service.

That's a vacation.

🎃 The Entire Ship Feels Different

One of my favourite parts isn't even a specific activity.

It's simply being onboard during Halloween season.

Disney Cruise Line ships are already incredibly themed, but the Halloween decorations make them feel completely different.

You walk into the Grand Hall or atrium and suddenly there are autumn colours, pumpkins and spooky little details throughout the ship.

It gives you that cozy fall feeling...

Except you're potentially sailing through turquoise Caribbean water while it's happening.

Which makes absolutely no seasonal sense.

And I LOVE IT.

I don't need crisp fall air.

Give me a pumpkin and a tropical drink.

🌳 The Enchanted Pumpkin Tree Is One of My Favourite Details

At the centre of the Halloween transformation is the ship's Enchanted Pumpkin Tree.

And this isn't just Disney putting a random Halloween tree in the atrium and calling it a day.

Each participating Disney ship has its own Pumpkin Tree with its own name, personality and story, and guests can experience storytelling moments as the tree comes to life throughout the celebration.

The trees include names like:

🎃 Reap – Disney Magic
🎃 Bog – Disney Wonder
🎃 Grim – Disney Dream
🎃 Mucklebones – Disney Fantasy
🎃 Boo – Disney Wish
🎃 Ginger – Disney Treasure

It's such a Disney detail.

Of course the Halloween tree has lore.

And because each ship's tree is different, it's another fun thing to experience if you sail Halloween on the High Seas on multiple Disney ships.

🐭 The HALLOWEEN CHARACTER OUTFITS!

This alone might convince me to book.

One of the things Disney Cruise Line does incredibly well is character experiences.

Unlike a theme park vacation where you may be rushing between rides, dining reservations and Lightning Lanes, cruising gives you multiple opportunities throughout your vacation to see characters.

Then Halloween on the High Seas gives those characters special seasonal looks.

You'll find Disney favourites appearing around the ship dressed for Halloween, with characters such as Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy, Goofy, Pluto, Chip and Dale joining the seasonal fun.

And I LOVE a seasonal Disney character outfit.

I need the photos.

I need the videos.

I need to see what everyone is wearing.

Even if you've met Mickey 25 times before...

You haven't necessarily met Halloween Mickey.

Therefore, obviously, we need another picture.

🧙‍♀️ Minnie, Daisy & Clarabelle as the Sanderson Sisters?!

This deserves its own section.

Because come ON.

During Halloween on the High Seas, guests may have the opportunity to see Minnie Mouse, Daisy Duck and Clarabelle Cow dressed as the Sanderson Sisters from Hocus Pocus.

Minnie as Winifred.

Daisy as Sarah.

Clarabelle as Mary.

This is exactly the kind of ridiculous, adorable Disney Halloween crossover I want.

If you're a Hocus Pocus fan, put this on your priority list.

🍬 YOU GET TO TRICK-OR-TREAT ON A CRUISE SHIP

There are certain sentences that make me immediately happy.

"We're going trick-or-treating on a Disney cruise ship" is one of them.

Halloween on the High Seas includes trick-or-treating around the ship, with designated locations where guests can collect treats.

And yes...

Adults can have fun too.

One of my favourite things about Disney Halloween events is that nobody cares how old you are.

Want to dress up?

Do it.

Want candy?

Get the candy.

Want a picture with Mickey in his Halloween costume?

Get in line.

You're on vacation.

🎉 Mickey's Mouse-Querade Is SO Cute

Another signature Halloween on the High Seas experience is Mickey's Mouse-Querade Party.

Disney describes it as a Halloween "scare-a-bration" featuring Disney friends dressed in their Halloween best, with guests encouraged to dress up and join the party.

It's music.

It's dancing.

It's costumes.

It's characters.

It's chaotic Disney Halloween energy.

And that's exactly what I want.

If you've got kids, they'll love it.

If you're a Disney adult...

You'll probably also love it.

No judgement here.

👗 You Can Dress Up TOO

This is another reason Halloween sailings are so much fun.

Guests can wear costumes!

Disney encourages guests of all ages to get into the Halloween spirit and dress up during the festivities.

And you can make this as elaborate or as simple as you want.

Coordinate your whole family.

Do a couples costume.

Dress as Disney villains.

Go as characters from your favourite movie.

Or throw on Halloween ears and call it a day.

Personally, I think seeing everyone walking around the ship in costume adds SO much to the atmosphere.

Just remember...

You're packing for a cruise.

Maybe don't create a costume requiring three additional suitcases unless you're prepared to explain yourself at the airport.

👻 There Are Halloween Activities Throughout the Cruise

It's not just one Halloween party on one night and then everything disappears.

Part of the fun is finding seasonal experiences throughout the sailing.

Depending on your ship and itinerary, Disney can offer Halloween-themed crafts, games, activities, character experiences and entertainment during Halloween on the High Seas.

This is where I always recommend checking the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app once you're onboard.

There is SO much happening on Disney cruises already.

Add Halloween activities?

Your schedule fills up quickly.

Favourite anything you really want to do so you don't suddenly realize on the last night:

“WAIT. WE NEVER DID THAT HALLOWEEN THING.”

🍰 Obviously There Are Halloween Treats

Disney knows its audience.

You cannot put thousands of Disney fans on a Halloween cruise and NOT give us themed food.

During Halloween on the High Seas, select locations may offer specialty Halloween desserts, treats and themed beverages.

And I love trying seasonal Disney food.

Do I need a dessert shaped like something spooky?

No.

Will I buy it because it's shaped like something spooky?

Obviously.

Just keep in mind that while plenty of food is included with your normal Disney cruise fare, some specialty items and alcoholic beverages can cost extra.

🏴‍☠️ And You Can Still Get Other Disney Cruise Traditions

This is something I think first-time cruisers sometimes misunderstand about specialty sailings.

Halloween doesn't suddenly replace everything else that makes a Disney cruise a Disney cruise.

Depending on your particular itinerary and ship, you can still experience other Disney Cruise Line entertainment and traditions alongside the seasonal festivities.

Halloween is an extra layer.

That's why I love it so much.

I don't feel like I'm booking a completely different vacation.

I'm booking the Disney cruise I already wanted...

But better.

🏝️ Halloween + Castaway Cay = My Kind of Fall Vacation

This is where Halloween on the High Seas gets particularly funny to me.

You can be dressed up for Halloween one evening...

And then potentially wake up the next morning...

Open your curtains...

And see Disney Castaway Cay.

Disney's version of fall:

🎃 Pumpkin decorations
👻 Halloween characters
🍬 Candy
🏝️ Tropical island
🌊 Turquoise water
☀️ Sunshine

And honestly?

I support it.

Many Disney Cruise Line Bahamas and Caribbean itineraries visit either Castaway Cay or Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, so depending on your sailing, you can combine spooky season with an actual tropical beach vacation.

This is exactly why Halloween at sea is such a fun alternative to a traditional fall getaway.

🌴 You Don't Have to Give Up Warm Weather for Halloween

As a Canadian, I appreciate this part.

Fall is beautiful.

Fall is cozy.

Fall also means we're getting dangerously close to...

winter.

So if I can celebrate Halloween while sitting beside a cruise ship pool?

That sounds like an excellent compromise.

You still get your pumpkins.

You still get costumes.

You still get Halloween.

But instead of wearing three layers and questioning why the sun sets at 5 p.m...

You're sailing somewhere warm.

Perfect.

🧡 It Makes an Already Special Vacation Feel Even MORE Special

This is probably the biggest reason I love these cruises.

Disney cruises already feel special.

There's something about walking onto the ship and hearing your family announced.

Seeing the characters.

Going to dinner every night and having your serving team come with you through the rotational restaurants.

Watching Disney shows.

Ordering room service.

Going to the pool.

Watching movies.

Seeing the ocean from your verandah.

Spending the day on Castaway Cay.

Then Halloween on the High Seas adds these little moments that make the cruise feel even more memorable.

The Pumpkin Tree.

The decorations.

The costumes.

The candy.

The characters.

The seasonal entertainment.

They're not necessarily the reason you love Disney Cruise Line.

They're the bonus.

🎃 I Would Choose Halloween on the High Seas Over a Regular Sailing

If I were comparing two similar Disney Cruise Line itineraries...

Same ship.

Similar price.

Similar ports.

And one was Halloween on the High Seas?

Halloween wins.

For me, there's almost no downside.

I still get the Disney cruise experience I already love, but now I get Halloween activities and entertainment on top of it.

And because the seasonal experiences are built into the cruise rather than requiring a separate event ticket like Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party or Oogie Boogie Bash, I love the value of getting that extra seasonal magic during a vacation I already wanted to take.

👻 Is Halloween on the High Seas Worth It If You Don't Have Kids?

YES.

I will die on this hill.

You don't need children to enjoy Disney Cruise Line.

And you definitely don't need children to enjoy Halloween on the High Seas.

Adults can:

👗 Dress up
🐭 Meet the characters
🎃 Enjoy the decorations
🍸 Try seasonal drinks
📸 Take all the Halloween photos
🎭 Watch the entertainment
🏝️ Enjoy the ports
🍽️ Have amazing dinners
🧖‍♀️ Spend time at the spa
🥂 Visit the adult lounges
☀️ Relax at the adults-only pool

Disney Cruise Line already has adult-exclusive pools, lounges and entertainment spaces built into its ships, so you can enjoy all the Halloween fun and then disappear into the adult areas when you've had enough candy.

Best of both worlds.

🆚 Halloween on the High Seas vs. Mickey's Not-So-Scary vs. Oogie Boogie Bash

After talking about all three, I think this is an important distinction.

They're all Disney Halloween.

But they're VERY different vacations.

Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is for that classic Magic Kingdom Halloween feeling, Boo-To-You, Cinderella Castle, fireworks, Hocus Pocus and trick-or-treating through the park.

Oogie Boogie Bash is for the villains, immersive treat trails, rare characters, Villains Grove and a slightly moodier Disney Halloween atmosphere.

And Halloween on the High Seas?

It's for someone who wants Halloween to be part of their entire vacation.

You're not buying five hours at an after-hours event.

You're waking up on a Disney ship every morning.

You're going on a cruise.

You're visiting destinations.

You're eating at the rotational restaurants.

You're seeing the regular Disney Cruise Line entertainment.

And Halloween is happening around you.

They're three completely different experiences.

My solution?

Eventually do all three.

Financially responsible?

Debatable.

Fun?

Absolutely.

📅 When Can You Sail Halloween on the High Seas?

Disney Cruise Line generally offers Halloween on the High Seas on select fall sailings, typically from September through October, although exact dates and participating itineraries can vary from year to year.

For Fall 2027, Disney has already confirmed that Halloween on the High Seas will return beginning in September on select ships, bringing back Halloween characters, special entertainment, deck parties and trick-or-treating at sea.

And considering some of the itineraries Disney has announced for Fall 2027...

I'm VERY interested.

Halloween on the High Seas paired with some of those more unique fall itineraries?

Yes please.

✨ Why Halloween on the High Seas Is One of My Favourite Ways to Sail Disney

At the end of the day, I don't love Halloween on the High Seas because it completely changes Disney Cruise Line.

I love it because it doesn't need to.

Disney Cruise Line is already one of my favourite ways to vacation.

Halloween just makes it more fun.

I get the cruise.

I get the food.

I get the shows.

I get the characters.

I get the destinations.

I get the pools.

I get the Disney service.

I get all the little things that make Disney Cruise Line feel different from other cruise vacations.

And then you give me Halloween too?!

Done.

I'll take the sailing with the pumpkins.

Every time.
